“A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.”

My name is Michael Southard and I am applying to be a foreign exchange student to Germany. I am fifteen (sixteen when I leave) and live in Buffalo, New York. I am applying for the Congress Bundestag Youth Exchange Scholarship (a full scholarship to Germany) for the 2010-2011 school year. I will be missing my junior year. I have always wanted to be an exchange student to Germany and I decided AFS was the right way to do it. For those of you who don't know about the Congress Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) Scholarship, I will go over that in a later post. I have already had my AFS In-Home interview and most of my full application is complete. I have signed up to go to Spain with my school for two weeks, which is like a shorter exchange because we live with host families and go to school with them. I knew I wanted to go to Germany but was always considering Austria, Sweden and Iceland as well. I can speak some German, I don't take it at school but my grandparents speak it so I picked it up from them. I will post more as more things happen.
